Following President Trump's press conference yesterday, when he blamed the "alt-left" for inciting violence in Charlottesville, two former Republican presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush issued a statement Wednesday calling on Americans to reject white nationalist and racist views.

"American must always reject racial bigotry, anti-Semitism, and hatred in all forms," the Bush statement said, as reported by The Dallas Morning News. "As we pray for Charlottesville, we are reminded of the fundamental truths recorded by that city's most prominent citizen in the Declaration of Independence: we are all created equal and endowed by our Creator with unalienable rights. We know these truths to be everlasting because we have seen the decency and greatness of our country."

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also distanced himself from the president's remarks Tuesday, in which he insisted that some of the Charlottesville rally-goers, who were chanting Nazi-era slogans and hurling racial epithets, were actually "nice people."

"We can have no tolerance for an ideology of racial hatred," said McConnell, in a statement. "There are no good neo-nazis, and those who espouse their views are not supporters of American ideals and freedoms. We all have a responsibility to stand against hate and violence, wherever it raises its evil head."

Other GOP leaders who also sought to distance themselves from Trump's apparent fondness for racists include House Speaker Paul Ryan, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, and Florida Senator Marco Rubio.

On the other hand, Vice President Mike Pence told reporters while traveling in Chile that he supports Trump's comments wholeheartedly.

"I stand with the president and I stand by those words," Pence said.
